HBA Cares and GE Johnson Partner to Build Downtown Colorado Springs Parklets During COVID

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when restaurants and businesses faced unprecedented challenges, HBA Cares and GE Johnson stepped up to support the local community by building outdoor parklets in downtown Colorado Springs. These temporary parklets provided much-needed outdoor seating, allowing businesses to continue serving customers while adhering to social distancing guidelines.

HBA Cares, the charitable arm of the Housing & Building Association of Colorado Springs, partnered with GE Johnson to quickly design and construct these outdoor spaces. By repurposing parking spaces into inviting dining and gathering areas, the initiative helped struggling businesses stay afloat while also enhancing the downtown experience for residents and visitors.

The project showcased the power of collaboration, with local builders, city officials, and business owners and community volunteers coming together to find creative solutions during a difficult time. Thanks to the efforts of HBA Cares and GE Johnson, downtown Colorado Springs gained a new vibrancy, demonstrating how thoughtful design and community-driven action can make a lasting impact.

Even beyond the pandemic, the success of these parklets has influenced discussions about the future of outdoor spaces in the city, proving that adversity can lead to innovation and stronger community connections.
