Colorado Springs, CO (March 25, 2010) Trucks loaded with bright red-enameled children’s bookcases are making deliveries to three area hospitals, seven local pediatrician offices, as well as eight early learning centers as part of the community-wide “Brainy Bunch” literacy effort.
The bookcases, built by members of HBA Cares- a non-profit organization founded by the housing and building industry – with materials donated by Ron Holladay of Holladay Brothers Construction, will contain an ongoing supply of books for children age birth to five. The goal of the project, spearheaded by Pikes Peak United Way: to put books in the hands of children, encouraging reading and increasing literacy levels.
With 1 in 4 third graders in Colorado Springs unable to read at grade level, as stated in the Quality of Life Indicators report published last September, reading to and with children from birth to 5 years of age, when 85% of the brain is being formed, strengthens their memory, expands their vocabulary and helps them understand the world around them, enabling them to succeed in school – and in life.
